ArtsConnection provides programs in dance, music, theater, and visual, literary, and media arts to public schools throughout the five boroughs of New York City. Our in-school programs give children in grades K-12 the opportunity to learn from and experience the work of the many exceptional professional artists on our roster. These artists represent a wide range of artistic disciplines and genres -- from traditional folk music to contemporary dance -- and a diversity of cultures to match the City's own multi-cultural mix.

Currently working in collaboration with over 120 schools annually, our programs are designed to meet a variety of educational goals. Schools use our programs to provide instruction in arts disciplines not covered by school specialists or classroom teachers or to enrich or extend an already existing arts program. Our programs are designed to connect to a variety of curricular, thematic, or cultural areas and can be targeted to reach specific grades or populations. Professional development for teachers and artists is also integral to all of our programs.

School Programs

Residencies
Artist residencies form the core of our school programs. Residencies combine a series of participatory arts workshops for students with performances and professional development sessions for teachers into a cohesive artistic and educational program, with the goal of providing integrated learning and collaborative experiences for all participants.

The Young Talent Program
Since 1978, our Young Talent program has given 3rd-6th graders the opportunity to receive professional, introductory instruction in dance, theater, or music with advanced, multi-year instruction for selected students. The Young Talent program has informed all of our other programming and continues to serve as a model for high achievement for all students and for instruction that builds on the strengths of each individual.

Inquiry-based Partnerships
Our inquiry-based partnerships are testimony to the continued growth of in-depth collaborations between ArtsConnection and a number of our partner schools. These partnerships serve as learning labs for the development of model arts-in-education programs and methodologies. They emphasize professional development for all participants, collaborative action research, assessment of student work, and program evaluation.

Corporate Partnerships
ArtsConnection's partnerships with corporations help to build and sustain specific arts programs, which complement our School programs. Underwritten by various corporations, these programs provide further opportunities for students to learn in and through the arts while giving the sponsors valuable opportunities to be recognized for supporting the artistic and educational lives of the City's children.

Professional Development
Professional Development for teaching artists, arts specialists, classroom teachers and ArtsConnection staff is an essential part of all of our programs. Over the past several years, professional development has emerged as one of our most important areas of research and development and will continue to be so as we look to the future. Currently, a wide range of professional development activities encourage communication between educators and artists, provide new approaches and opportunities for teaching and learning, and strengthen the impact of our programs in each school.
