The End of the School Year is Near

The 2009-2010 school year proved to be one filled with artistic discovery and learning for students in the NYC public schools. This year, ArtsConnection collaborated with:

  • 104 schools in all five boroughs
  • 168 teaching artists, assistants and accompanists
  • Over 30,000 students with classes in dance, theater, music and visual arts

Our programs from all disciplines flourished and students from all over NYC were able to explore the arts this school year. Dance for Life entered its 6th programming year. Students in 10 elementary schools learned the benefits of dance as part of a healthy lifestyle thanks to the support of the MetLife Foundation. Third grade students at PS 233 in Brooklyn auditioned for the school's Young Talent Music Program. Forty-one were selected and joined their 4th and 5th grade peers to receive in depth violin and cello instruction. The program reaches nearly 100 students each year. In partnership with the New York City Department of Education and the Shubert Foundation, ArtsConnection provided theater instruction to 20 public schools throughout the five boroughs, 10 of which participated in the Shubert Program for the first time this year. Artists from our Student Art Program (SAP) have their work on display at the offices of corporate sponsor PricewaterhouseCoopers. The exhibition, titled "The View From Here," enjoyed a special Opening Night Reception May 13th.

30th Anniversary Benefit a Success!

On Thursday, May 6, 2010, ArtsConnection celebrated its 30th anniversary in style at the American Museum of Natural History. Joy Behar, of The View, hosted the evening. ArtsConnection honored Jonathan Klein, President of CNN US and presented the prestigious Janklow Awards to puppetry teaching artist Erin Orr and Principal Tashon McKeithan of PS 65 in the Bronx. Concluding the evening was a riveting set by Peter Cincotti, a talented jazz musician and singer-songwriter. The event was co-chaired by Lisa & Richard Plepler and Tracey & Robert Pruzan, and the event’s creative décor was generously donated by Board Member and Event Producer, David Monn. The evening raised over $550,000 to support arts education in public schools.

AC Quoted in Gotham Gazette

In February 2010, ArtsConnection Executive Director Steven Tennen was contacted by the Gotham Gazette to comment on the state of the arts in New York City's public schools. About the disparity in arts programming city wide, Steve said: "there are over 1,600 schools in the city, and therefore, 1,600 different universes in terms of how the arts are looked at."
