The core of our In-School programs are in-depth artist residencies which combine a series of participatory arts workshops for students with performances and professional development sessions for teachers into a cohesive artistic and educational program. Drawing on our extensive roster of professional teaching artists who represent a wide variety of disciplines and genres, residencies serve as a point of introduction to ArtsConnection for many schools while also forming the basis of our long-term partnerships.

ArtsConnection program staff work closely with school representatives to design residency programs that best meet the educational needs of each school. Some schools may choose to focus on a single arts discipline or design residencies for specific grade levels. Others may want to connect the teaching artists' residencies to specific curricular themes. Still others may want the arts programming to reach the entire school or to enhance existing arts programs. In most cases, schools design programs comprised of residencies by different teaching artists and to address a variety of needs.

Residencies typically include most or all of the following:
  • A workshop series with an average of 10 sessions for 2-5 classes on one or more grade levels. Artists work with each class separately.
  • Professional development for teachers. Prior to the residency, teachers take part in a participatory workshop with the teaching artist(s). This is followed by a planning session during which teachers and artists identify mutually agreed upon goals for the residency. During the residency, ArtsConnection program staff facilitate reflection meetings which bring together artists and teachers to assess student learning.
  • An auditorium performance by the teaching artist or artists for 250-300 students.
  • After-school programs.
  • Family events that take place during the evening or on weekends, which include performances and/or workshops.
