2000-2001 Program Designed for PS 169k
Community School District 15

Total Number of Events: 305

PS 169 is an elementary school (K-5) located in the Sunset Park neighborhood of Brooklyn. The school serves a diverse community, including a large Chinese-American population. The 2000-2001 school year is the second year that PS 169 has collaborated with ArtsConnection.

For this Project Arts proposal, ArtsConnection designed a residency program which included workshop series for students at all grade levels and assembly performances for the whole school. The youngest students in K-1 participated in creative movement and vocal/percussion workshops. Older students engaged in a variety of arts experiences including Chinese calligraphy, Chinese folk dance, Modern dance, Native American dance and culture, storytelling, and creating hand puppets and murals. For students in the Chinese-American bilingual classes, the chance to participate in workshops in Chinese dance and calligraphy served an additional and meaningful purpose, as these children have few, if any, opportunities to experience the wealth of their own cultural background.

Many of the workshops included a culminating performance by the teaching artists for students participating in the workshops. Assembly performances of Chinese dance and Afro-Caribbean music were enjoyed by the entire student body. In addition, all teachers participated in professional development workshops.
