PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
ArtsConnection looks forward to the 2010-2011 school year by continuing partnerships and new programs that will bring the arts to public school children throughout the five boroughs. This year, we will be working with over 100 public schools. Here’s a look at what’s happening now.
Four Schools Get a Fresh Coat of Paint
ArtsConnection kicked off the school year in a big way! In a partnership with the Anderson School, the Computer School, MS 44 and West Prep Academy, ArtsConnection facilitated the creation of a 16’ x 78’ student-designed mural in the schoolyard of O'Shea Education Complex, which is shared by the four schools. Through the support of a variety of local businesses and with the guidance of of AC teaching artists Janet Braun-Reinitz and Rochelle Shicoff, students from the schools designed and painted the mural, which will be publicly dedicated in late October. Check out exclusive photos on the West Side Spirit!
New After School Program at the Meeting House Working with the founder of the Meeting House, an innovative new after school program created to address the social development of children with diverse abilities, ArtsConnection staff and teaching artists participated in planning the opening semester of programming . Exciting group classes and integrated after school programming offer fun, friendship and community all under one roof. ArtsConnection artists are providing instruction in Creative Movement and Yoga and Making Original Books while collaborating with occupational and speech therapists to help students develop their interpersonal communication skills.
High 5 Continues to Shine!
ArtsConnection’s High 5 Tickets to the Arts recently ended another successful year of providing NYC teens with access to the arts. Over the past year, High 5 worked with 170 arts partners, including BAM, Irish Repertory Theatre, New York City Ballet, Dance New Amsterdam, Carnegie Hall, Merkin Concert Hall, Rubin Museum and the NY Philharmonic. High 5 offered teens from the 5 boroughs tickets to over 2,500 events and distributed over 17,000 tickets to teens and their families. High 5 also provided free arts writing workshops to 140 teens from across the city through the Teen Reviewers and Critics program.
