Over 150,000 students enrolled in NYC public schools are designated English Language Learners (ELL), while children who speak a language other than English at home make up 40% of the 1.1 million student population. Helping these children to become literate, global citizens in a complex world is a huge challenge, both locally and nationally. In response, ArtsConnection has created, tested and evaluated new methods of teaching and learning in the arts that have proven to help ELL students succeed.
Last week, ArtsConnection hosted 75 teachers from 11 New York City public schools in Children's First Network (CFN) 204 to kick off Professional Development for Developing English Language Literacy through the Arts (PD DELLTA), a three-year project funded by the United States Department of Education (US ED). PD DELLTA supports collaboration across disciplines among arts educators, ESL teachers and classroom teachers to provide standards-based arts and ELA instruction. Throughout the three years of the project, these educators will participate in 40 hours of hands-on, comprehensive professional development annually. They will learn to document and analyze student work in the arts and ELA using digital video technology, and to design and teach inter-disciplinary units of study that include linguistic objectives and formative assessment strategies.
The DELLTA program will be implemented in a total of 17 NYC public schools this year. PD DELLTA will take place in 11 elementary schools in Queens and is funded by the the US ED. In addition, three elementary schools in Washington Heights and the South Bronx (funded by The Heckscher Foundation for Children) and three middle schools in Queens (funded by the New York Community Trust) will receive instruction through DELLTA.
