MAKING THE ARTS ESSENTIAL TO EDUCATION
|
Early Elementary, Pre K-2nd Grade
Early Elementary Dance
Young dancers explore physical expression and create their own movement vocabularies. Students learn to control and direct movements as they build strength, balance, rhythm and flexibility. Dance also helps students develop spatial awareness and sense of direction.
Sample dance residencies (12 sessions):
- Learn about the natural world and use imagination to move like animals
- Develop original dances in small groups
- Use materials and props to explore movement as an extension of the body
- Study traditional dances from China, West Africa, Mexico or Afro-Caribbean cultures
|
Early Elementary Music
Young musicians build vocabulary and are introduced to the elements of rhythm, tempo, melody and song structure. Students use their voices and bodies as they clap rhythms in a call and response format, sing in unison and/or play percussion instruments.
Sample music residencies (12 sessions):
- Sing folk songs from many cultures
- Learn about the Jazz Age and sing jazz classics like “Take the A Train”
- Write and sing original songs
- Begin to play xylophones
|
Early Elementary Theater
Storytelling, creative dramatics and puppetry create language-rich classrooms. Children use their imaginations while expanding their knowledge of story structure and sequence. Students learn to share space, listen for cues, work cooperatively and explore a range of vocal dynamics and movements that enhance presentation skills.
Sample theater residencies (12 sessions):
- Listen to stories from around the world and retell them, adding individual details
- Construct simple puppets and act out stories
- Bring familiar stories to life using physical, facial and vocal expression
- Create original stories, focusing on story structure
|
Early Elementary Visual Arts
Young artists engage in hands-on, active exploration of basic visual art concepts – pattern, shape, line, color. They learn about size, texture and volume through exploring materials. Talking about artistic choices helps young students build vocabulary, judgment and analytical skills.
Sample visual art residencies (12 sessions):
- Make collage, draw or paint two-dimensional representations of animals, people and places
- Use clay to construct objects such as pinch pots, coiled pots and relief sculptures
- Design original books in a variety of forms
- Learn about bridges and build their own fantasy bridges
- Construct small-scale sculptural environments for animals and people
