High School
Through complex projects in dance, music, theater and the visual arts, students learn to take small steps to reach big goals. They become more aware of their individual strengths and understand how they function as part of a group. Students increase their ability to grasp abstract concepts, assimilate information, integrate learning from various subject areas and translate their thoughts into artistic expressions that have personal significance.
Through the arts, high school students learn:
- Focused perception, creative expression of ideas and feelings, critical thinking skills and decision-making tools
- Physical skills that connect with intellectual and emotional expression
- How to recognize each group member’s strengths, negotiate roles and build leadership skills
- To give and receive constructive criticism
- To consolidate their sense of identity while growing and taking artistic risks

High School Dance
Depending on students’ level of proficiency high school dancers learn how to take a dance class or focus on one or more dance forms to improve their technique. Students develop a skilled eye for analyzing and appreciating creative choices. They learn to identify and describe themes, the use of tension and release and the influence of music on movement, as well as elements such as place, level, speed, physical alignment, energy, weight, direction, pathways and focus. Movement styles are drawn from may sources, including folk dance, modern dance and the social dances of different times and cultures.
